TL;DR — An AI video agent plans and renders a full ad, while a video generator turns one prompt into one clip. We ran the same 20-second ad brief through both routes on the same model on the same day. Use the generator for single shots, and the agent for structured ads that hold together.

If you make AI video today, you can already get great single shots. The headache starts when you try to stitch four shots into one ad.

You get mismatched lighting, products that disappear between cuts, and clips that don't tell a story. We wanted to see if handing the whole job to an agent fixes that mess. So we ran a real test on Seadanse and put both results side by side.

The difference in one sentence

The core difference is how you talk to each tool and how much work it takes off your plate.

You talk to a generator in shots, but you talk to an agent in outcomes. With a generator, you write a prompt for one camera angle, click make, and edit the pieces yourself. An agent reads your brief, works out the beats, draws storyboard frames, and makes every shot in order.

On their product page, Pexo put it plainly: an agent owns the whole job; a generator owns a single clip; an editor leaves the whole job to you.

DeepReel made a similar point: a tool obeys instructions. An agent understands context and makes recommendations.

What we ran, and how

We kept every setting identical so we could test the two routes fairly:

  • We wrote one brief for a 20-second spot for a small-batch chilli oil brand.
  • The brief named five moments:
    • A night-market stall.
    • A hand lifting the jar into the light.
    • Noodles being dressed.
    • A close-up of the chilli flakes settling.
    • The jar back on the stall with the market glowing behind it.
  • It asked for a warm, handheld look with no voiceover.
  • Both routes ran on Seedance 2.0 at 720p on Seadanse on the same day.
  • Route A sent the brief to the agent once.
  • Route B pasted the exact same brief text into the video generator, twice, unchanged.

We used the same words, the same model, and the same resolution on the same day. That let us see what the agent added on top.

What the agent came back with

When we gave the brief to Route A, the agent didn't jump straight into making video. It planned the structure first.

It chose a vertical 9:16 frame on its own. Nothing in our brief asked for vertical, but the agent picked it for a short mobile ad spot.

Then it split the 20 seconds into four distinct narrative beats:

  • HOOK (0-4 seconds): establishing the night-market stall.
  • TURN (4-11 seconds): a hand lifting the jar and dressing noodles, with an internal cut at 8 seconds.
  • DETAIL (11-16 seconds): a tight close-up of chilli flakes settling in the oil.
  • LAND (16-20 seconds): the jar resting on the stall counter with the market glowing in the background.

Before spending credits on video, the agent drew a still storyboard frame for each beat. Each storyboard frame cost 4 credits. That let us check the framing, the jar, and the lighting before making any clips.

The agent asked for approval before every paid step. The whole spot took four confirmations, one for each beat. We rendered beat by beat because we pinned Seedance 2.0, which takes a single flowing description of 4 to 15 seconds per generation, so a 20-second ad cannot fit in one pass. The site's default model, Seedance 2.5, accepts second-level timing inside one generation of up to 30 seconds, so the same story on the default would have been one take and one confirmation.

The video charges came out to 208, 364, 260, and 208 credits. That came to 1040 credits for the finished film, plus 16 credits for the four storyboard stills. Every quote matched the charge on our balance, and the system billed nothing that wasn't shown on a price card first.

Three of the four beats came back in about three and a half minutes each. The fourth took longer because our test setup stalled mid-run. That pause was our own fault, not the model's.

From the first prompt to the finished ad, the run took about half an hour. Roughly a third of that time was our own stall. The output was a finished file of 20.27 seconds at 720x1280, with sound.

What one prompt came back with

For Route B, we pasted the exact brief text into the standard generator box. We ran it twice with the same words to see what it would do.

Both single-prompt clips came back 5 seconds long. Neither run gave us the 20 seconds we asked for.

Both runs collapsed the five described moments into one continuous food close-up:

  • The first clip showed oil pouring onto noodles in a bright daylight kitchen.
  • The second clip showed chopsticks lifting noodles from a bowl.

Neither clip had the jar, the stall, the night market, or any story arc from the brief. Both defaulted to a horizontal 16:9 frame at 1280x720.

Each clip cost 260 credits. Each took under four minutes to finish.

Nothing about either clip is broken. The food motion looks smooth and the lighting is clean. But they are good five-second clips of the wrong thing, leaving out almost everything we asked for.

Looking at how the agent plans an ad shows you the real trade. The generator is fast and simple, but it answers one prompt with one shot. The agent takes more credits and needs four confirmation clicks, but it delivers a finished 20-second cut that follows your brief.

Where the generator wins

Standard prompt-based generation is still the right tool for many everyday tasks. It gives you speed, lower total credits, and zero setup steps.

If you just need one shot, the generator is hard to beat. You type a prompt, click once, and get a five-second clip in under four minutes.

You don't need to review storyboards or click through four price cards when you only want a single background shot. When your project doesn't need an arc, the extra planning steps just get in your way.

Single-prompt runs also spend fewer total credits when you only need one piece. In our test, one clip cost 260 credits, while the finished four-beat film cost 1040. If you already have an edit timeline and only need five seconds of b-roll to fill a gap, the generator does the job without extra baggage.

Where the agent wins

The agent route solves the structure problems that make multi-shot AI video painful.

Its biggest strength is keeping the story intact across cuts. By splitting our brief into four beats, the agent held the story together across the whole 20 seconds. It kept the night-market mood, showed the jar, and put an internal cut right at the eight-second mark.

The agent also lets you fix small mistakes without starting over. You see a still storyboard frame for 4 credits before you spend credits on the video.

If one beat looks off, you can adjust or re-render that single beat on its own. You don't have to scrap the whole ad and re-run your prompt from scratch.

Is an AI video agent just a wrapper around a video generator?

Can I get the same result by writing a longer prompt?
