Is GPT Image 2.5 Free? What Each Plan Actually Gets
Is GPT Image 2.5 free? Yes, inside ChatGPT on every plan. See what free accounts get, the missing daily limit, and the one paid feature.
The team behind Seadanse. We run the models we write about, and we publish the specs, prices and limits the marketing leaves out.

TL;DR — Yes, GPT Image 2.5 is free to use inside ChatGPT on every plan, including the free tier. You can make and edit pictures without paying, but free accounts miss out on Images with thinking. OpenAI doesn't publish a daily limit, so you'll only find the cap when you hit it.
Verdict: You can use GPT Image 2.5 for free in ChatGPT today, but you can't pay nothing on the API.
You've searched for this question and probably found dozens of sites promising free access. Most of those pages want your email, or they push you toward third-party tools.
The real answer depends entirely on where you use the model. OpenAI publishes clear rules for some features, but it doesn't publish numbers for usage limits or image token costs.
Yes, GPT Image 2.5 is free in ChatGPT
You don't need a paid subscription to make images with the new model. OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Images 2.5 on 8 September 2026 to all tiers.
According to OpenAI's documentation, ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers without an upfront fee. That means you can open the app and start generating right away.
You can use it across several platforms:
- The web interface in your browser
- The iOS mobile app
- The Android mobile app
- Inside Codex
The one thing free accounts don't get
Free accounts get almost every tool in the image suite. But there's one specific feature OpenAI keeps behind a paywall.
That's Images with thinking. It lets the model spend more reasoning effort on your prompt before it builds the image.
Here's who gets access to it today:
- ChatGPT Plus accounts
- ChatGPT Pro accounts
- ChatGPT Business accounts
- ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu accounts, which OpenAI lists as coming soon
It's the only feature OpenAI documents as unavailable on the free plan.
How many free images do you get?
Nobody outside OpenAI knows how many free images you get.
OpenAI publishes no daily, hourly, or monthly image count for any tier. We checked the launch post and the help articles on 9 September 2026, and neither page lists a figure.
So what does that mean for you?
- You'll only know you've hit the cap when the app stops you.
- Any specific image count you read on third-party blogs is a guess.
- Paid plans also face limits, but their caps aren't published either.
What you can do in ChatGPT without paying
Even without paying, free accounts get access to most of the toolset. You don't just get a simple text box.
Here's what you can do on the free tier:
- Generate an image from a prompt in a conversation, or from the sidebar Images tab.
- Pick an aspect ratio from the menu or type it directly in your prompt.
- Edit a picture by typing your requested change in the chat box.
- Highlight part of a picture with the selection tool to describe specific changes.
- Open Templates from the sidebar, pick a style, and add your details.
- Draw a quick layout on mobile with Sketch by typing
@and picking Sketch. - Share the prompt behind an image by clicking Share, then Prompt template, then Copy link.
Keep two limits in mind. First, Templates aren't available in Work mode yet. Second, OpenAI notes that highlights aren't always precise, so edits may extend beyond the area you picked.
Every image stays saved in your Images tab. If you want to delete an image, you delete the conversation where you made it.
The API is not free
If you want to build software with these models, you can't use them for free. We found no free tier documented for image models on the API.
The API gives developers two models: gpt-image-2.5-flare and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst.
OpenAI charges by tokens rather than per picture:
- Image input costs $8.00 per million tokens
- Cached image input costs $2.00 per million tokens
- Image output costs $30.00 per million tokens
- Text input costs $5.00 per million tokens
These rates match GPT Image 2 token rates. But here's the catch: OpenAI publishes no token count per image. OpenAI states that the GPT Image 2 calculator does not estimate GPT Image 2.5 token consumption.
Because of that, nobody can convert those rates into a price per picture.
API rate limits also apply by tier:
- Tier 1: 5 images per minute
- Tier 2: 20 images per minute
- Tier 3: 50 images per minute
- Tier 4: 150 images per minute
- Tier 5: 250 images per minute
Some accounts also need to complete API Organization Verification before they can call GPT Image models.
Free doesn't mean unmarked
Even if you don't pay for an image, it won't come without provenance tags. OpenAI marks every single file it creates.
OpenAI embeds C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarking into every generation across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
Here's how those two systems work:
- C2PA metadata records the file's origin in an open industry format.
- SynthID embeds an invisible watermarking layer inside the image data that you can't see in the picture.
If you plan to use free generations for commercial work, keep these marks in mind. They don't stop you from using the file, but anyone checking the image data can see it came from an AI tool.
| Where you use it | What it costs | What you get | What OpenAI doesn't say |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, free plan | Nothing | ChatGPT Images 2.5, on web, iOS and Android | How many images you get before it stops |
| ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business | Your existing plan | The same, plus Images with thinking | How many images each plan gets |
| ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu | Your existing plan | ChatGPT Images 2.5; Images with thinking is listed as coming | When it arrives |
| The OpenAI API | Per token, from $8.00 per million image input tokens | gpt-image-2.5-flare and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst | How many tokens one image spends |

If you hit your limits in ChatGPT or want to test other top models, you've got other options.
On Seadanse, you can generate images and videos across multiple models in one browser generator. If OpenAI will not give you a clear free-tier number, you can test GPT Image 2.5 here instead.
In the picker, you choose between two separate options: GPT Image 2.5 Flare for fast everyday tasks, and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst for precise editing at longer generation times. Both take a prompt or up to three reference images, and both offer 1K, 2K, and 4K output.
You can try several other leading models right now:
- GPT Image 2 Generator for previous-generation OpenAI output
- Nano Banana 2 Generator for fast image generation
