Is Pixlr Free?
Is Pixlr free? The classic editors are ad-supported, but the AI tools stop at a sign-up box and paid plans start at $2.49 a month.
The team behind Seadanse. We run the models we write about, and we publish the specs, prices and limits the marketing leaves out.

TL;DR — Pixlr's photo editors are free and ad-supported, but the AI generators aren't free in the way the site implies. Press Generate as a logged-out visitor and a sign-up box opens instead of a picture. A free account starts with 10 credits, which buys about ten cheap images and not one video, and plan credits die at the end of the month.
Pixlr titles its generator pages "Free AI Image Generator" and "Free AI Video Generator". We opened those pages on 26 August 2026 to see where the free features stop. We also run a competing site, Seedance 2.5 AI Video Generator.
What is actually free on Pixlr
Pixlr bills its homepage as a Free AI Photo Editor & Image Generator. You get access to two browser editors: Pixlr Express and Pixlr Editor, plus a Community gallery.
You also get seven tools:
- Photo Collage Maker
- AI Image Generator
- AI Video Generator
- AI Audio Generator
- AI Image Editor
- AI Face Swap
- Background Remover
Ads pay for this free access. Pixlr's cheapest paid plan lists "Ad-Free" as its first benefit on its pricing page. That entry plan also lists "Unlimited saves" and lets you run one job at a time.
What happens when you press Generate
Both generator pages load for logged-out visitors with an open prompt box, a model picker, and a Generate button that shows a credit price.
We opened the image generator, typed a one-line prompt, and picked FLUX.2 Klein 9B, which is their cheapest model at 1 credit. We pressed Generate, but nothing came out. A box opened headed "Hi there!" with the message "Welcome to Pixlr, so happy to see you!", offering sign-up buttons for Google, Facebook, Apple, or email.
So the word "free" on those generator pages means free after you make an account, not free without one.
What we got instead of an image on 26 August 2026: a sign-up box, on a page titled "Free AI Image Generator".
What the paid plans cost
Pixlr sells four subscription tiers. Premium's the first tier that opens up private generations and grants access to all image, video, and audio models. Jobs at once scale from 1 on Plus, to 4 on Premium, and 8 on Ultra, which also adds a priority queue and extended high-res exports.
On their video generator, a 5-second 720p clip from Seedance 2.0 Fast shows 125 credits on the Generate button. That same clip from Seedance 2.5 shows 250 credits.
At 1080p, Seedance 2.5 shows 575 credits for a 5-second clip. Pixlr's pricing page estimates that Plus covers about 4 fast AI videos a month, while Premium covers about 50.
| Pixlr plan | Price a month | Credits a month | What the card adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not published | Ads, and the editors |
| Plus | $2.49 | 80 | No ads, one job at a time |
| Premium | $9.99 | 1,000 | All image, video and audio models, four jobs at once |
| Ultra | From $24.99 | Up to 10,000 | Unlimited "fast" image generations, eight jobs at once, priority queue |
| Ultra MAX | $49.99 | Double Ultra's | The same, with twice the credits |
Prices are the monthly ones from Pixlr's own pricing page, read on 26 August 2026. Paying for a year takes 20% off.
Pixlr's plans on 26 August 2026. Every card carries the same line: credits valid for 1 month.
What a free account actually buys
A free Pixlr account holds 10 credits. The generator prints "10 remaining" under the Generate button, and their account endpoint returns 10 credits on the free plan.
Those 10 credits buy about ten of the cheapest images. FLUX.2 Klein 9B, GPT Image 2 Low, and Qwen Lightning cost 1 credit each.
They buy almost no video. The cheapest clip on the entire platform is Vidu Q3 at 360p for 1 second, which costs 9 credits. The next cheapest is P-Video at 720p for 3 seconds at 12 credits, which you can't cover on a free balance.
Seedance 2.5 at its cheapest setting there — 480p for 5 seconds — costs 115 credits, about eleven times what you have.
If you press Generate anyway, you don't get an error message. With Seedance 2.5 picked, the button reading "Generate (250)", and 10 credits on our account, clicking it opened a box headed "Choose payment method" offering "Credit / Debit Card" and "PayPal". There's no "not enough credits" warning and no option to top up with credits.
Ten credits on the account, a 250-credit clip in the box: pressing Generate opens a payment chooser, 26 August 2026.
We spent one of our ten free credits on FLUX.2 Klein 9B at 1024x1024 text to image, and it finished normally.

Your credits die at the end of the month
Pixlr's credit rules work like this:
- Every plan card carries the line "Credits valid for 1 month".
- Subscription credits reset on your renewal date. For example, Pixlr's FAQ says a monthly Premium subscriber sitting on 863 credits on renewal day is reset to 1,000.
- If you cancel your subscription, your remaining subscription credits reset to zero.
- Credit packs that you buy separately never expire.
What "unlimited" means on the Ultra plan
Ultra's headline benefit is "Unlimited free 'fast' image generations". A footnote on the plan card states: "Subject to fair use. Availability of AI services is not guaranteed and may vary based on demand and system capacity." The upsell modal shown right after sign-up prints "5,000-10,000 monthly AI Credits", meaning Ultra starts at 5,000 credits and reaches 10,000 on the MAX card.
In Pixlr's own model data, the fast tier is the cheap image rows: FLUX.2 Klein 9B, GPT Image 2 Low, Wan 2.7 Image, and Qwen Lightning. Each of these costs between 1 and 5 credits.
The unlimited rule doesn't include Nano Banana 2, which sits in the ultra tier at 15 credits. It doesn't include any video models either, as the unlimited allowance covers images only.
What we ran and what we didn't
We made a free account with Google sign-in on 26 August 2026 and used it.
We ran exactly one generation: FLUX.2 Klein 9B, text to image, 1024x1024, for 1 credit. It finished, and our balance went from 10 credits to 9. We never generated a video on Pixlr, because the free balance can't pay for one.
Pixlr's pricing page still has no free column. The 10-credit figure comes from the product itself, not from their marketing pages.
If you only want to make one clip
We run Seadanse, where you can make AI video and images. Creating an account gives you 40 free starter credits without asking for a payment card.
There's also a standalone credit pack at $9.9 that needs no subscription. When you submit a job, our platform holds your credits and settles them only on success. As stated on our Seedance 2.5 pricing page: "Failures, timeouts, and platform errors release the hold automatically." Paid tiers include private generations, commercial licences, and watermark-free exports.
Limits on our platform, plainly:
- Plan credits expire at the end of each 30-day cycle and don't roll over.
- Extra credit packs stay valid for 12 months.
- Seedance 2.5 doesn't do 4K on our platform, as 4K belongs to our Seedance 2.0 preset.
- We don't have photo editors, collage makers, or background removal tools.

So, is Pixlr free?
Pixlr's free if you only want to edit images in your web browser with ads on the screen. It isn't free for regular AI generation, because 10 credits won't cover a video clip and only buy a few cheap images.
If you need regular video generations or private outputs, you'll need a paid subscription or a platform like Seedance 2.5.
We reviewed Pixlr's interface, pricing cards, and model data on 26 August 2026, and tested a free account on the same day.
