Not Today Cupid Meme: The AI Cupid Handbag Video Explained
The Not Today Cupid meme is an anti-Valentine catchphrase and an AI video where a woman knocks Cupid out with her handbag. Here is how it spread.
The team behind Seadanse. We run the models we write about, and we publish the specs, prices and limits the marketing leaves out.

TL;DR — The Not Today Cupid meme is an anti-Valentine's catchphrase that, since late August 2026, captions a 15-second AI video where a grown-up Cupid dives at a woman and she knocks him out of the air with her handbag. The version everyone copies dropped October 11, 2026, outside a Gothic cathedral, reaching 641,608 likes by October 31. Take the handbag role from one photo of you (or your dog or cat) with Seadanse's AI Cupid video maker.
Viewers fell in love with the clip fast. Under the Argentine clip, one viewer joked, "Le tuve que poner una restricción de acercamiento a Cupido 😅" ("I had to put a restraining order on Cupid"). Another laughed, "cupido y yo, ya no nos hablamos 😁" ("Cupid and I aren't talking anymore").
People wanted in on the joke, too. Viewers asked "Donde lo haces ?" ("where do you make it?") twice in the comments, and nobody answered. Another asked, "como se puede hacer este video" ("how can you make this video"), and got silence.
We've got you covered. You'll learn what the phrase means, what happens across the 15 seconds, and the four videos that built the trend. We'll also break down whether it's real, what people call it, and how you can make your own.
What Is the Not Today Cupid Meme?
The Not Today Cupid meme is two things that share one name. One is an older anti-Valentine's catchphrase, and the other's a viral AI video where a woman smacks a diving Cupid with her handbag.
In the viral video, a grown man dressed as Cupid dives from a cathedral ledge, only to get knocked out cold in mid-air.
Here's what happens in the cathedral reel:
- The ledge: high on a carved stone ledge of a cream-stone Gothic cathedral, a grown-up Cupid in a white toga, with big white wings, draws a gold bow. He aims down at a woman crossing the empty square far below.
- The dive: about a second in, he drops off the ledge and dives head first, wings spreading.
- The glide: the camera follows from behind and above as he glides low over the square toward her.
- The swing: in front of the carved doors, she swings her black handbag hard with both hands and smacks him in mid-air.
- The landing: he flips backwards and lands flat on his back on the paving stones, in a burst of white feathers, the gold bow beside him. The slow love song stops dead at the hit.
- The walk: he lies still, knocked out cold; she smooths her hair, picks up her bag and walks toward the camera as if nothing happened.
The clip's vertical and 15 seconds long, and nobody speaks. The joke is the sudden swing and her calm walk away while footsteps echo on the stone.

Where the Not Today Cupid Meme Came From
The Not Today Cupid meme started as a black-and-white cartoon on TikTok in late August 2026 and became an AI video trend by October. Creators built on the premise over several weeks until the cathedral clip exploded.
Here's how it built up:
- Late August 2026: a 9-second black-and-white cartoon on TikTok circulated with the caption "Not today Cupid 💘". A woman walks, a little cartoon Cupid aims at her, and she bats him away with her handbag. The words on screen read: "Aim somewhere else!" The post is itself a repost, and who first drew it isn't known.
- September 2, 2026: the first photoreal AI version on TikTok, posted by @veronicaescobar346 from Argentina, carried the caption "gracias a todas le dimos una paliza a cupido!!! 😂" ("thanks everyone, we gave Cupid a beating!"). A palace rooftop, a muscular Cupid dives, and a woman in a white coat knocks him down with her bag, picks it up and walks off. The clip runs 17 seconds and earned 319,200 views and 14,200 likes.
- October 9, 2026: the arrow version on Instagram by @anamadeai, an AI fashion-film account, appeared. On an autumn boulevard, a small winged archer's heart arrow misses and pins a coat in a shop window, and the woman falls for the coat instead. It runs 14.6 seconds and pulled 114,800 likes.
- October 11, 2026: the cathedral reel on Instagram by @emily.skye.official became the version everyone copies. It has the Gothic cathedral square, the grown-up Cupid on the ledge, the black handbag, the feathers, and the walk toward the camera. It runs 15 seconds with no caption. It had 641,608 likes and 14,186 comments by October 31, 2026, and it gained about 145,000 new likes after October 21, so it's still growing.
- From mid-October 2026: reposts and remakes appeared on TikTok under #notodaycupid. They include reposts of the cathedral reel with a "Not Today Cupid" caption, a Pixar-style remake, and a New York street version where Cupid gets kicked. None passed 3,000 views.
The real heat is on Instagram, not TikTok. Since October 21, 2026, video websites sell the handbag scene as a ready-made effect, as shown among the AI Cupid video generators we compared.

What Does "Not Today, Cupid" Mean?
"Not today, Cupid" tells Cupid to skip you today: no romance, no crush, and no Valentine's mush right now. Single people use the line to say they're happy on their own. It's most popular around Valentine's Day, when romantic pressure rises.
In Roman mythology, Cupid is the Roman god of love and desire. His arrows make people fall head over heels in love. Saying "not today" tells the god of desire to put his weapons away.
The catchphrase spent years appearing on GIFs, meme pictures, and anti-Valentine's merchandise. You'll spot it on hoodies, mugs, and T-shirts, where raccoon shirts are a fan favorite.
On TikTok, the #notodaycupid tag is mostly anti-Valentine's T-shirt posts from sellers who pushed shirts in January 2025 and January 2026.
The AI video turns that static line into slapstick action. The woman doesn't have to say the words out loud. Her handbag swing delivers the entire message for her.
Is the Not Today Cupid Video Real or AI?
The Not Today Cupid video is AI. It isn't a real stunt. The trend started as a black-and-white hand-drawn cartoon in late August 2026. Every photoreal version since, from the September 2 Argentine clip to the October 11 cathedral reel, is AI-made.
Here's how each major upload displays its origins:
- The Argentine clip: TikTok labels it AI-generated.
- The cathedral reel: it's marked as AI content, and it reads as AI.
- The arrow reel: its caption credits an AI video app.

Why the Not Today Cupid Meme Is So Funny
The Not Today Cupid meme is funny because Cupid finally misses, and the woman doesn't even stop walking. She doesn't scream, flinch, or run away. Instead, she swings once with both hands, smooths her hair, and keeps going.
The comedic timing sells the joke. The slow strings stop dead the instant the handbag connects. That sudden silence tells you romance ended on the spot.
Viewers love how totally unbothered she remains. One commenter wrote, "Quedó hecho pomada😂" ("he got flattened"), picking up 13 likes. Another added, "Ya nadie quiere a cupido lo siento 🤷🏻♀️😂" ("nobody wants Cupid anymore, sorry") with 11 likes.
A third joked, "Yo quiero una cartera como esa por si las moscas" ("I want a bag like that, just in case"), earning 10 likes. Another viewer noted, "El vídeo parece un comercial de perfume😂" ("the video looks like a perfume ad").
Under the cathedral reel, one viewer asked, "Donde me grabaron jajaja" ("where did they film me haha"). People see their own dating exhaustion in her calm reaction.
What People Call the AI Cupid Trend
The AI Cupid trend goes by several names, and "Not today, Cupid" is the most common one. You'll see different platforms and regions put their own spin on the title.
Here's what you'll see in captions:
- "Not today, Cupid": the original cartoon's caption, and still the most common one.
- "Aim somewhere else!": the words on screen in the August cartoon.
- "Cupid picked the wrong girl": an English caption on Instagram and Facebook reposts.
- "Cupid fails": "Cupid's failed shot" and "cupid fail" show up in reel captions.
- "Le dimos una paliza a Cupido": Spanish, from the Argentine clip ("we gave Cupid a beating").
- "Купидон выбрал не ту девушку": Russian ("Cupid picked the wrong girl").
Video platforms usually group these clips under the label "AI Cupid trend." It's easy to mix this up with other viral Cupid content online.
FIFTY FIFTY's "Cupid" is a 2023 K-pop song with a hand dance, and the Cupid Shuffle is a classic line dance. Neither involves a handbag smack, as explored in our guide on the AI Cupid trend vs the FIFTY FIFTY Cupid dance.
