The first organic Google result for this exact question is a GitHub repository called seedance-2.5-open-source. We opened the repository on 26 August 2026 to see what's inside.
It contains only the static build output of a Next.js website. That means it holds nothing but HTML files and page assets. You won't find any .safetensors files (the trained model files you download and run), any training code or any model card.
The organisation describes itself as "the engineering and developer-facing home for the Seedance2.5 ecosystem." Its README lists features like authenticating with an API key, creating generation tasks, polling task status, reading generation history and checking account credits.
That's just a web client for someone else's hosted model. The site it fronts, seedance25free.com, charges credits whenever you generate a clip.

What ByteDance actually published about Seedance 2.5
ByteDance introduced Seedance 2.5 in a post dated 31 July 2026. The post describes what the model does and where to use it.
It doesn't link a download, a repository, a model card or a license. The post states: "Today, Seedance 2.5 is rolling out on Jimeng AI, Doubao Pro, and other platforms."
The announcement also pointed to API access through BytePlus ModelArk. That API is now live, and the pricing documentation lists Seedance 2.5 under the model ID dreamina-seedance-2-5-260628. An API key gives you calls against ByteDance's servers, which isn't the same as owning a file.
We also checked the ByteDance-Seed Hugging Face organisation on 26 August 2026. No Seedance model has ever shipped weights, including Seedance 2.0.
There's no weights file, no repository and no license. Because ByteDance hasn't published the files, there's nothing you can download or run offline.

ByteDance does publish open weights — just not for video
ByteDance isn't completely against publishing weights. The company shares weights for image research, but it draws a line at video.
ByteDance published BAGEL-7B-MoT on Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 license. That release includes the weights, the code and a working demo.
The file is 29.6 GB. It has 7B active parameters (the trained model settings you download and run) and 14B in total.
BAGEL handles image understanding and image generation, not video. In ByteDance's own write-up, the company calls it "The Open-Source Unified Multimodal Model."
ByteDance published full weights for this image project, but its flagship video models sit on the closed side.

Open source, open weights and free are three different things
People often mix up three terms when they talk about AI models:
- Open source means the creators publish the weights, the code and a license that lets you use both. LTX-2 is open source because Lightricks published the full training code alongside the weights.
- Open weights means you can download the checkpoint (one saved version of the model file), but the license may still bar your country or your revenue band. MiniMax H3, Wan 2.2 and HunyuanVideo are open weights.
- Free to use means a hosted product charges nothing at the door. Nothing about the model itself is public.
Most pages that rank for "free Seedance" mean a free web tool, not downloadable code.

MiniMax H3: the closest thing to a Seedance 2.5 you can run
MiniMax published weights for MiniMax H3 (also called Hailuo 3) on Hugging Face at MiniMaxAI/MiniMax-H3 on 3 August 2026, as reported by the South China Morning Post. The weights come as .safetensors files in BF16 and F32.
The model has 33 billion parameters across two checkpoints: H3-Base-FL2VA for text and keyframes to video with audio, and H3-Base-Ref2VA for reference-based generation.
The published checkpoints produce 4 to 15 seconds, 768p on the short side, 24 frames per second and 32 kHz stereo audio. MiniMax held two modules back: H3-Context-IR (the instruction rewriter) and H3-Regenerate-2K (the 2K upscaler). As the MiniMax H3 model card states: "Due to the complexity of the system, this module is not yet open-sourced."
Wan 2.2: the open one is the older one
Alibaba published open weights for Wan 2.2 under Apache 2.0 on 28 July 2025. It's still the newest Wan flagship with published weights you can run at home.
Alibaba opened Wan 3.0 as an API-only public beta on 6 August 2026. No weights have been published on Hugging Face, GitHub or ModelScope.
Claims that Wan 3.0 ships Apache-2.0 weights in two sizes are repeated widely, but Atlas Cloud reports that no vendor page supports this.
LTX-2.5: the only permissive license in this group
Lightricks released LTX-2 on 6 January 2026 with open weights, full training code, native 4K output and synchronised audio, according to the company press release. Lightricks followed with LTX-2.5 on 11 August 2026.
The LTX-2 license is free to use for organisations under $10 million in annual recurring revenue. Above that threshold, you need a commercial license. The license carries no branding requirement, and no country is excluded.
HunyuanVideo: open weights the EU and UK can't use
Tencent published weights under the Tencent Hunyuan Community License Agreement.
The license doesn't apply in the European Union, the United Kingdom or South Korea. Users there aren't permitted to use, reproduce, change, distribute or display the works or their outputs.
Above 100 million monthly active users, you need a separate commercial license. You also can't use outputs from the model to train competing models.
What each license stops you doing
Unlike standard Apache 2.0 code, most open-weights video models attach limits before you can run them:
- Missing modules and lower resolution: MiniMax held back H3-Context-IR and H3-Regenerate-2K, so the downloadable checkpoints stop at 768p on the short side.
- Application forms by country: The MiniMax H3 Community License needs an application form if you're in the US, EU, UK or South Korea.
- Outright region bans: Tencent's license bans users in the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea from using the model or displaying its clips.
- Revenue and user limits: Lightricks needs a paid commercial license once you pass $10 million in annual revenue, while Tencent needs one above 100 million monthly active users.
If you just want the video, the license is not your problem
